To say that the KTM’s dominated the Arenacross Lites West class last weekend in Kansas City, Missouri for the Amsoil Arenacross Series would be an understatement. KTM bikes took the top ten spots as if this was the KTM Sr. Arenacross Challenge. Taking the number one sport was Steven Mages who admits he was thinking about skipping the main to rest for the Arenacross class and he literally did it on his own.
Kurt: So, you just got off the track for the Arenacross first main. Tell me about it.
Steven: Yea I got a back row start. Well we had a front row gate pick but I got a back row just thinking it would be better in the inside because it’s such a short start. Then there was carnage going into the sand section and came out like dead last. I caught up with a bunch of guys wrecking and stuff. I thought I did better than that but I think I got ninth. So hopefully get in the inside, back row farther inside so I can get a better start. I feel really good though, but there is a lot going down in that sand section. It’s pretty much a battle to stay up.
Walk me through that Lites class main event win.
In the Lites class I got the holeshot. I really wasn’t planning on doing it so I could stay fresh for the big class. My mechanic and my dad were not even there. I went up there and they thought I was going to pull off. I took off, I got the holeshot and just rode steady and got the win. My dad found out, he was taking to my mom on the phone and she’s like he’s out there right now, what are you doing. He’s like what, and shes like yeah, he just won. So he totally missed it.
How does this win compare to other wins?
The sand is huge.
Are you use to riding in sand at all?
Yea but they really don’t do it much in enclosed places like this. So, it’s fun; I don’t mind it. It changes it up. Hopefully, I can get a good finish next time, I’m sitting fifth in the points so.
