Matt Goerke is the “Sandman.” He is from Florida and his best finishes in the outdoor nationals were all on sand tracks. His best finish was a first overall in 2009 at Southwick MX-338 in the 450 class with a 6-1 moto finish. So, I’m sure when he walked into the Sprint Center on a snowy Saturday morning for the Amsoil Arenacross Series he was excited to see the long sand section as if it was a day at the beach.
Kurt: Wow, that was a great race. Tell me about it.
Matt: The night started off not so well in my heat, I only got a third. So, I knew with this start, I knew I really need at top two. But I really didn’t get the greatest pick for the start. I won the head to head which really helped me out. I went to the first main, I started second row. I just watched my pit board every lap, my mechanic told me before I go to be consistent, don’t do anything stupid and try to get a top three. You’ve already won the head-to-head and already got the next main. And that’s what I did. I got a third, in the next one I got the holeshot. I did not make one mistake and I felt awesome.
All right, so I heard on the podium that you like the sand. So when you walked out here first thing during track walk what were you thinking?
I did not know if it would make much of a difference, but I was thinking I like that. Because I’m from Florida, I’ve won it at Southwick National in the 450 class. I’m good in sand, I felt comfortable all night. I’m sure I was the most consistent.
And it’s not like you get much sand tracks in Arenacross.
No, not at all. I was pumped with that.
This is your second win. How does this rate or compare to others?
The first one felt awesome; it was great to finally get it off my back. Yeah, this one feels just as good because last week I felt I had the win in the bag and I fell. So, I made up for it this week which is nice.
What do you take out of here to the next round?
Just confidence for the next round. I’m learning more and more. I feel like tonight I rode a perfectly smart race.
I know you got many people in your corner. Who do you want to give a shout out to?
Yeah my whole team, Babbitts / Monster Energy / Amsoil / Kawasaki is awesome, my mechanic Chad, my fiancée Erin, Atlas Brace, All Sport Dynamics and everyone that helps me out, thank you.
